Despite Cannings and despite the Kennedy review, it is extremely worrying that the main recommendation, the interviewing of the parents within the first 24 hours of the child's death, by a trained police officer and the designated SUDI paed, to obtain a full medical history, does not happen. Without a full medical history, pathologists will not know what to look for at post mortem, what to screen for, what to exclude as a cause of death.
EDS is a connective tissue disorder. One of the main features of EDS is hypermobility (double jointes). EDS can, in its various types, cause fractures, bleeding, bruising and in type 4, death.
I take the time to explore the family history, yet again I find myself in a position which, according to all the protocols out there, I shouldn't be in. Now, sadly, it will be fought out in a court room, when had the agencies done their jobs from the outset would not have made it into a courtroom!!! Yes folks, here we go again.
So, all you paeds out there who religiously read this blog - look up EDS, learn about the condition and apply it in your ever day work of including it as a differntial DX and save so many families and their children from the harm of legal proceedings eh.
